Elena Sheehan was born in China of Russian parents. Raised in San Francisco, she received her BA from the University of California, Berkeley. She studied photography with Nathan Lyons at the Visual Studies Workshop in Rochester, New York and with Arthur Siegel at the Institute of Design, Illinois Institute of Technology, where she received her MS in 1978. Active in the photographic community in Chicago and the San Francisco Bay Area, she has taught at San Francisco City College and the University of California Extension Division. Her work has been exhibited and published in Korea, Italy, Greece, Germany, France, Belgium, Mexico as well as in the United States. A book of photographs with poetry by the well-known Greek poet, Liana Sakelliou, was published in Athens, Greece in 2004. Her book Journey Through Seven Circles, published in 1983 in a limited edition, is now out of print. Elena now lives and works in San Francisco, CA.
