Luis Medina was born in Havana, Cuba in 1942. In 1966 he came to Chicago with his friend and associate, Jose Lopez. They enrolled in the School of the Art Institute and began to study sculpture but their interest gradually shifted to photography. They found that they worked well together as a team and their association as a professional photographers continued until 1976. It was during this collaborative period that Luis Medina made this photograph. A major project of the Lopez-Medina partnership was the documentation of the University of Chicago which they conducted with Patrice Grimbert. This resulted in the book, Dreams in Stone (University of Chicago, Press 1976.)
